3 Helpful Tips for Styling Your Family Portraits

Are you dying for some awesome family portraits for your home? Do you want to be one of those families who send out beautiful holiday cards filled with their family’s smiling faces? There are a numerous number of ideas out there for your family session but I have a few tricks I like to share with my clients!

Feeling comfortable in front of a camera is hard! As a camerawoman, I rarely put myself in front of a camera. But, when I do, I follow these 3 easy tips!

  • Dress it up!

  • Use accessories!

  • Plan, plan, plan!

Dress it up!

If you have ever longed to rock a long romantic gown, tulle skirt or floral crown, this is the perfect opportunity to bust them out. Dresses & skirts are the most flattering to the camera, this is why you see them on the runway. I recommend long, flowy dresses & skirts because they add extra movement to your images. They also look stunning outdoors! Use this as a chance to get your kids dressed up too! Who doesn’t love a little man with a bowtie? Or a little lady with a tulle skirt? I’ve never met a family who was disappointed they didn’t dress up for their session.

Use accessories!

Just adding an accessory or two to your outfit has the power to change your look dramatically! Bracelets & earrings bring interest. A big statement necklace can really POP on camera! Just make sure these pieces do not compete with each other. Props are another awesome thing to bring. Blankets to sit on or wrap up in, old-fashioned bikes & sentimental cups are all perfect additions to any family session!

Plan, Plan, Plan!

Once you have booked a photographer who’s style vibes with yours, start planning your location. Be thinking about the feeling you want your portraits to have. Romantic? Goofy? Fun? Whimsical? Your location will be your first step in planning with your photographer. Locations are generally up to you! I love shooting outdoors in wide-open natural spaces where the light is perfect. Local mountain ranges are popular as are bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers. But, really the options here are virtually endless! Once you have a photographer, location & date set, it’s time to plan those outfits. If you need help coordinating your crew check out my FREE guide below.
